Greatest joke of the day -

Dad: Heck! They let a midget do the torch relay? Look at 'im!

Joyce: It's Paralympic, Lou dou!

I have 4 English Dictionaries. Oxford Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary, Longman English Dic, Chinese-English Dic n an e-dic. 4 yrs ago, Prof Chen warned me not to use e-dic unless I was on a train or plane. Thus, it's still there n rarely touched. I don't use my Chinese-English dic that frequetly since my English is way better than my Chinese. Longman? Seldom use coz they use plain English to explain English. So I use Oxford most of my time n I carry it wherever I am. Its pages are so greasy that it's embarrassing to put up a pic here. But once in a while, this dic pisses me off coz

1. I'm learning American English but it's a British Dic. So BE is privileged.

2. Hard to find words for country name, world-famous resort, fruit n vogue words.

3. It fully embodies British Gentleman's spirit - Politeness or Indirectness.

e.g. HOOKY

Page 849. Hooky (also hookey) (esp AmE). Play hooky=play trunt at TRUANT

I still have no idea what hooky is. So I gotta turn to Page 1894.

here we go

play truant(BrE) = (AmE informal play hooky) ...

Your Majesty, can't u tell me directly its meaning on Page 849???

This reminds me of my American teacher Richard. Years ago, I asked him the difference b/t "USA" n "U.S.A". Answer - either is correct.

---Why they have 2 versions? There should be some differences.

---coz printing 2 more dots costs money!

If I were the boss, I'd just print "US". 1 more letter saved!

So I guess the same applies to Oxford which undoubtedly has larger circulation!

I feel no better than speaking English this way

When a Chinese student won a scholarship, you say "Wah! Very clever hor?" When a Malay student won a scholarship, you say "Aiya! Of course lah! He Malay mah!"

( Quotes from Kenny @  http://www.kennysia.com )

I practice (Mind u. verb & noun form of "practise" are the same in AE) this kinda English with my buddy Micky, Kason n Allan who could both English n Cantonese. When Phil's in Kunming, we tried to blend some Chinese curse words in our English talks. Yah, we only used English n some French when our topic is complete confidentiality.

Reasons

1. Few will understand us when we swear at the city, suckers or politics.

2. Our Chinese sucks

"Ai ya! Zhen ta ma de lei<tired> / pang<fat> / chou<fugly>!

"If she(saleslady) is fugly, I'll call her Xiao Jie"

"Ma de! Why the fuck u put ur fucking stuff in the way!"

But these langues still don't live up to my expectation. I wanna invent a language of my own, say, blend Mandarin, Cantonese, English, French n Japanese together. Should I call it La Langue de Joyce? キキ語 or?

Having been following Prof Jin's etiquette lesson for a while, yesterday I tried it. We went to check our new appartment again n did find a better designer! When we were out, a stupid fugly kept on bothering my mom for her cellphone #. Then my voice -

---Err, just gimme ur business card. We'll contact u lah!

---O! I dun have one ar!

---(Fuck! Ur boss's fucking 孤寒<cheap>) Then let me write urs in my cellphone!

---Gimme urs, gimme urs. U come to see our demo tomorrow afternoon lah!

---Ai ya! It's gonna rain soon lah! We gotta go lah!

---Gimme ur # lah! C'mon!

Good Lord! She successfully foxed my mom's # at last!

Earthquake again yesterday? None of us felt it. haha, we got an awesome condo!

Ok, ok, enuf liao!

Songs I'm listening to these days: 相愛很難 by Anita Mui (梅艳芳). Fabulous!!!
